As summer heats up, so does hail activity across the Midwest. July through September marks the peak of hail season for the region, and is notorious for volatile weather patterns that often bring damaging hailstorms. Widespread hail across Southern Wisconsin has produced hailstones ranging from pea to tennis-ball size, damaging vehicles across multiple counties. Hailstorms can leave behind serious vehicle damage. The early season storms continue to keep MWA’s appraisers busy with claims on vehicles, campers/RV’s, semi’s, boats, ATV’s, agricultural and construction equipment. After an owner files a claim with their insurance provider, the provider sends the claim over to MWA to coordinate an inspection with the owner. MWA reaches out to the owner within 24 hours, and often times immediately, to coordinate an inspection time. MWA appraisers have many years of experience handling hail claims. The appraisers are able to identify and document hail-related damage, which may not always be obvious at first glance.
Here’s what happens during inspection:
Detailed Visual Inspection
Appraisers assess all exterior panels, including the roof, hood, trunk, doors, and quarter panels. Because hail dents can be subtle, inspections are typically conducted in shaded or indoor areas using consistent lighting to reveal damage more effectively.
Use of Specialized Tools:
To identify minor or concealed dents, appraisers often rely on specialized tools such as paintless dent repair (PDR) lights or line boards. These tools enhance visibility of surface imperfections and help differentiate hail damage from other wear and tear.
Documenting Damage:
Each dent is documented, often with photos and detailed notes, to create a comprehensive damage report. This report helps determine the repair estimate or if the vehicle is potentially a total loss.
Repair vs Total Loss Evaluation:
Based on severity and cost of repair (especially when PDR isn’t sufficient), appraisers provide recommendations on whether the vehicle is a repair candidate or a potential total loss. Estimates are aligned with prevailing labor rates, parts pricing, and repair methods.
Vehicle hail damage can be stressful for policyholders. MWA ensures a professional, transparent appraisal process helps make the process go smoother for all parties involved.
